{"id":1042,"date":"2016-11-30T19:35:25","date_gmt":"2016-12-01T01:35:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/emptynestbirder.com\/?p=1042"},"modified":"2020-09-11T19:28:00","modified_gmt":"2020-09-12T00:28:00","slug":"cape-town-south-africa-birding-october-27-november-1-2016","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emptynestbirder.com\/?p=1042","title":{"rendered":"Cape Town South Africa Birding     October 27-November 1, 2016"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">We engaged Avian Leisure of Simon\u2019s Town, a suburb of Cape Town, for 6 days of birding, mammal viewing and wine tasting in Western Cape Province of South Africa.&nbsp; Avian Leisure is owned and operated by Patrick and Marie-Louise Cardwell, and Patrick was our driver and guide for the week.&nbsp; Although Patrick and Louise operate a small B&amp;B, it was full at the time and so they arranged for us to stay at Mariner\u2019s Guest House in Simon\u2019s Town for the first 3 nights.&nbsp; The 4<sup>th<\/sup> night was near the De Hoop Nature Reserve east of Cape Town and the 5<sup>th<\/sup> night was at a dairy farm near the Grootvadersbosch Forest area east ot Swellendam.&nbsp; Our final night was at a hotel near the airport so that we could catch an early morning flight to Windhoek, Namibia for another 11 days of birding and photography.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">We were surprised by the number mammals to be seen in the Western Cape.&nbsp; Among them were <strong>Elands<\/strong>, Africa\u2019s largest antelope.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" src=\"https:\/\/emptynestbirder.com\/wp-content\/gallery\/november-2016\/eland.jpg\" alt=\"eland\"><\/p>\n<p><strong>Cape Mountain Zebra<\/strong>&nbsp;is one of the 2 subspecies of Mountain Zebra.&nbsp;&nbsp; [Mountain Zebra, found only in southwest South Africa and in Namibia, is one of the 3 species of Zebra:&nbsp; Grevy\u2019s Zebra is confined to northern east-central Africa, <strong>Burchell\u2019s Zebra<\/strong> is widespread, and <strong>Hartman\u2019s Mountain Zebra<\/strong> is the Mountain subspecies found only in northern Namibia].&nbsp; We enjoyed the challenge of distinguishing between Burchell\u2019s and the 2 subspecies of Mountain Zebra, so here is a pictorial.&nbsp; As we saw the Burchell\u2019s and Hartman\u2019s only later in Namibia, this is a bit out of sequence, but it makes for a nice challenge right here.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" src=\"https:\/\/emptynestbirder.com\/wp-content\/gallery\/november-2016\/cape-mountain-zebra.jpg\" alt=\"cape-mountain-zebra\"><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" src=\"https:\/\/emptynestbirder.com\/wp-content\/gallery\/november-2016\/burchells-zebra.jpg\" alt=\"burchells-zebra\"><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" src=\"https:\/\/emptynestbirder.com\/wp-content\/gallery\/november-2016\/hartmans-zebra.jpg\" alt=\"hartmans-zebra\"><\/p>\n<p><strong>Bontebok<\/strong> are strikingly patterned antelope that once were on the brink of extinction.&nbsp; Down to about 30 individuals, they were saved by local farmers and are now securely established in several South African preserves.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" src=\"https:\/\/emptynestbirder.com\/wp-content\/gallery\/november-2016\/bontiboc.jpg\" alt=\"bontiboc\"><\/p>\n<p>Other antelope seen in the Western Cape area were Grey Rhebok and Cape Grysbok.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, one of our primary goals was to see the <strong>Jackass (African) Penguins<\/strong>, the only penguin species found in Africa.&nbsp; We need not have worried, as these funny little birds were numerous and tame at Boulder Beach in Simon\u2019s Town and at another coastal area that we stopped at later in the trip. This became our 10<sup>th&nbsp; <\/sup>lifetime penguin species, adding to the 9 that we have seen in the southern part of the western hemisphere.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" src=\"https:\/\/emptynestbirder.com\/wp-content\/gallery\/november-2016\/african-penguin.jpg\" alt=\"african-penguin\"><\/p>\n<p>I have been making a mild effort to see at least one species of each family of birds in the world.&nbsp; There are about 10,000 species, in about 200 families.&nbsp; South Africa provided a potential of 4 new families for me:&nbsp; Sugarbirds, Honeyguides, Buttonquail and Whydahs.&nbsp; At the wonderful Kirstenbosch Gardens in Cape Town, the <strong>Cape Sugarbirds<\/strong> graced the colorful and unique Fynbo vegetation in good numbers, making for a pleasant garden experience.&nbsp; Kirstenbosch Gardens is a jewel, not to be missed.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" src=\"https:\/\/emptynestbirder.com\/wp-content\/gallery\/november-2016\/sugarbird.jpg\" alt=\"sugarbird\"><\/p>\n<p>Patrick and Marie-Louise invited us to their house in Simon\u2019s Town for tea one morning, and we were delighted to view in their garden a pair of <strong>Pin-tailed Whydahs<\/strong>, the second of the four new families sought.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" src=\"https:\/\/emptynestbirder.com\/wp-content\/gallery\/november-2016\/pin-tailed-whydah.jpg\" alt=\"pin-tailed-whydah\"><\/p>\n<p>We did not succeed in finding any of the other two families, Honeyguides or Buttonquail.<\/p>\n<p>We enjoyed an afternoon visiting one of the oldest vineyards in South Africa, the Groot Constantia, and tasting several of its wines.&nbsp; Founded in 1685 by the first governor of Cape Town, an official of the Dutch East India Company, the vineyard has survived changes of ownership and the original mansion is still maintained on the premises.<\/p>\n<p>Among the more colorful new species found during the drives around the countryside were <strong>Denham\u2019s Bustards<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><b><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" src=\"https:\/\/emptynestbirder.com\/wp-content\/gallery\/november-2016\/denhams-bustard.jpg\" alt=\"denhams-bustard\">&nbsp;<\/b><strong>Blue Cranes<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" src=\"https:\/\/emptynestbirder.com\/wp-content\/gallery\/november-2016\/blue-cranes.jpg\" alt=\"blue-cranes\"><strong>Orange-breasted Sunbirds<\/strong><b><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" src=\"https:\/\/emptynestbirder.com\/wp-content\/gallery\/november-2016\/orange-breasted-sunbird.jpg\" alt=\"orange-breasted-sunbird\"><\/b><strong>Lesser Double-collared Sunbirds<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" src=\"https:\/\/emptynestbirder.com\/wp-content\/gallery\/november-2016\/lesser-collared-sunbird.jpg\" alt=\"lesser-collared-sunbird\"><strong>Southern Boubous<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" src=\"https:\/\/emptynestbirder.com\/wp-content\/gallery\/november-2016\/southern-boubou.jpg\" alt=\"southern-boubou\"><strong>Hartlaub\u2019s Gulls<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><b><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" src=\"https:\/\/emptynestbirder.com\/wp-content\/gallery\/november-2016\/hartlaubs-gull.jpg\" alt=\"hartlaubs-gull\">&nbsp;<\/b><strong>African Black Oystercatchers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" src=\"https:\/\/emptynestbirder.com\/wp-content\/gallery\/november-2016\/black-oyster-catcher.jpg\" alt=\"black-oyster-catcher\"><strong>Capped Wheatears<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" src=\"https:\/\/emptynestbirder.com\/wp-content\/gallery\/november-2016\/capped-wheatear.jpg\" alt=\"capped-wheatear\"><strong>Spotted Thick-knee<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" src=\"https:\/\/emptynestbirder.com\/wp-content\/gallery\/november-2016\/spotted-thick-knee.jpg\" alt=\"spotted-thick-knee\"><\/p>\n<p><strong>Spotted Eagle-Owl<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><b><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" src=\"https:\/\/emptynestbirder.com\/wp-content\/gallery\/november-2016\/spotted-eagle-owl.jpg\" alt=\"spotted-eagle-owl\">&nbsp;<\/b><b>&nbsp;<\/b><strong>Bully Canary<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><b><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" src=\"https:\/\/emptynestbirder.com\/wp-content\/gallery\/november-2016\/bully-canary.jpg\" alt=\"bully-canary\">&nbsp;<\/b><strong>Bokmakerie<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" src=\"https:\/\/emptynestbirder.com\/wp-content\/gallery\/november-2016\/bokmakerie.jpg\" alt=\"bokmakerie\"><\/p>\n<p><strong>African Paradise Flycatcher<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><b><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" src=\"https:\/\/emptynestbirder.com\/wp-content\/gallery\/november-2016\/paradise-flycatcher.jpg\" alt=\"paradise-flycatcher\">&nbsp;<\/b><\/p>\n<p><strong>Hammerkop<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><b><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" src=\"https:\/\/emptynestbirder.com\/wp-content\/gallery\/november-2016\/hamerkop.jpg\" alt=\"hamerkop\">&nbsp;<\/b><\/p>\n<p><strong>African Black Duck<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" src=\"https:\/\/emptynestbirder.com\/wp-content\/gallery\/november-2016\/african-black-duck.jpg\" alt=\"african-black-duck\"><\/p>\n<p><strong>African Shelduck<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" src=\"https:\/\/emptynestbirder.com\/wp-content\/gallery\/november-2016\/african-shelduck.jpg\" alt=\"african-shelduck\"><\/p>\n<p><strong>Southern Red Bishop<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><b><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" src=\"https:\/\/emptynestbirder.com\/wp-content\/gallery\/november-2016\/red-bishop.jpg\" alt=\"red-bishop\">&nbsp;<\/b><\/p>\n<p>We spent one night at a dairy farm near Grootvadersbosch.&nbsp; The family maintains a herd of about 500 Jersey milchcows.&nbsp; They treated us to a lovely home-cooked meal with them in their 200 year old farmhouse.&nbsp; This was certainly a highlight of our South Africa experience.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, this <strong>Cape Cobra<\/strong> made its escape from our wheels as we drove along one of the rural roads.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" src=\"https:\/\/emptynestbirder.com\/wp-content\/gallery\/november-2016\/cape-cobra.jpg\" alt=\"cape-cobra\"><\/p>\n<p>I started the South Africa trip with a total of 2,934 species of birds on my world List.&nbsp; I added 92 in South Africa, to break my 3,000 target.<\/p>\n<p>Avian Birding and the Cardwells are a fine choice for anyone seeking a short and pleasant birding experience in the Western Cape.&nbsp; They include, in addition to birding and animal viewing, other activities and interests and pleasant and interesting companionship.&nbsp;&nbsp;
