{"id":1112,"date":"2017-05-30T08:05:16","date_gmt":"2017-05-30T13:05:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/emptynestbirder.com\/?p=1112"},"modified":"2017-05-30T08:05:16","modified_gmt":"2017-05-30T13:05:16","slug":"bhutan-birds-april-2017-part-4","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emptynestbirder.com\/?p=1112","title":{"rendered":"Bhutan Birds  &#8212;  April, 2017  &#8212; Part 4"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left\" align=\"center\">I am particularly fond of the Wood Warblers and Hummingbirds of North and South America.\u00a0 They are, for the most part, small, quick, colorful and challenging to identify.\u00a0 In Asia, the Sunbird family fills that niche.<\/p>\n<p>Two beautiful and very similar Sunbird species are <strong>Mrs. Gould\u2019s Sunbirds<\/strong> and <strong>Green-tailed Sunbirds.<\/strong>\u00a0 Can you tell which is which?<\/p>\nngg_shortcode_0_placeholder\nngg_shortcode_1_placeholder\nngg_shortcode_2_placeholder\n<p>(The first one above is Mrs. Gould\u2019s, note the crimson mantle and back.\u00a0 It is perched on one of the many rhododendron trees which were in full bloom.\u00a0 The last two are Green-tailed)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Another colorful little bird is a member of the numerous Old World Flycatcher family.\u00a0 Here is a <strong>Pygmy Blue Flycatcher<\/strong>.<\/p>\nngg_shortcode_3_placeholder\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>More common, and as beautiful in their own right, were the <strong>Verditer Flycatchers.<\/strong><\/p>\nngg_shortcode_4_placeholder\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Ultramarine Flycatchers<\/strong> never seemed to show up in good light, but in good light, they were quite pleasing to the eye.<\/p>\nngg_shortcode_5_placeholder\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Many members of the Flycatcher family do not have a claim to pretty colors; they are often quite drab.\u00a0 That makes identification even more of a challenge.<\/p>\n<p>This <strong>Sultan Tit<\/strong> has a just claim to its name.<\/p>\nngg_shortcode_6_placeholder\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Whereas the Blood Pheasants won Bird of the Trip award, what might have been a contender were the more difficult to see <strong>Silver-eared Mesias<\/strong>.<\/p>\nngg_shortcode_7_placeholder\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The next installment of the Bhutan birds seen on our recent trip will feature a mixture of the more interesting birds that cooperated with the in-house photographer, and that do not clearly fit in the \u201cbig bird\u201d or \u201cvery small bird\u201d categories, but represent a cross-section. \u00a0Also included will be a few of the animals we saw.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I am particularly fond of the Wood Warblers and Hummingbirds of North and South America.\u00a0 They are, for the most part, small, quick, colorful and challenging to identify.\u00a0 In Asia, the Sunbird family fills that niche.
