{"id":700,"date":"2013-05-02T21:07:10","date_gmt":"2013-05-03T02:07:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/emptynestbirder.com\/?p=700"},"modified":"2020-09-13T12:48:41","modified_gmt":"2020-09-13T17:48:41","slug":"west-coast-pelagic-birding-cruise-april-14-18-2013","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emptynestbirder.com\/?p=700","title":{"rendered":"West Coast Pelagic-birding Cruise   April 14-18, 2013"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Between April 14<sup>th <\/sup>and April 18th this year Barbara and I cruised along the west coast on the Holland-America cruise ship, the Zaandam.&nbsp; The ship was repositioning from its winter cruise grounds south of San Diego, to Alaskan waters.&nbsp; Although we are not regular \u201ccruisers\u201d this particular trip interested me because of the opportunity for finding some \u201cpelagic\u201d birds along the route to Vancouver.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; High on my list was a \u201cScripp\u2019s Murrelet\u201d.&nbsp; This bird was known as Xantus\u2019s Murrelet, but it was given its new name when Xantus\u2019s Murrelet was split very recently into two species, one the Scripp\u2019s Murrelet and one, generally found in Mexican waters, called the \u201cGuadaloupe Murrelet\u201d.&nbsp; I did not see any Murrelets and I don\u2019t think any of the other birders on board saw any either (there were about 15 of us dedicated birders among the almost 900 guests on board).&nbsp; Oh, well, hopefully there will be another day for that search.<\/p>\n<p>Another of my target birds was Cook\u2019s Petrel.&nbsp; I was a little hampered by back problems which delayed my morning activities, particularly on the morning when everyone else saw several of them.&nbsp; Strike 2 on me.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" src=\"https:\/\/emptynestbirder.com\/wp-content\/gallery\/april-may-2013\/img_9729-for-blog.jpg\" alt=\"img_9729-for-blog\"><\/p>\n<p>Third among my objectives was Murphy\u2019s Petrel.&nbsp; Fortunately, they showed up in relative abundance and this became my North American bird number 717.<\/p>\n<p>An unexpected bonus bird appeared in the form of a single Hawaiian Petrel.&nbsp; I don\u2019t think anyone expected to find this Hawaiian based pelagic this close to North America (we were cruising about 30 to 50 miles off the California shore at the time).<\/p>\n<p>We enjoyed our experience on the Zaandam.&nbsp; The food was good, the rooms were very nice and the ride was relatively smooth.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" src=\"https:\/\/emptynestbirder.com\/wp-content\/gallery\/april-may-2013\/img_9726-for-blog.jpg\" alt=\"img_9726-for-blog\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Between April 14th and April 18th this year Barbara and I cruised along the west coast on the Holland-America cruise ship, the Zaandam.&nbsp; The ship was repositioning from its winter cruise grounds south of San Diego, to &hellip; <a href=\"https:\/\/emptynestbirder.com\/?p=700\">Continue reading <span class=\"meta-nav\">&rarr;<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"ngg_post_thumbnail":0,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[3,6,7],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-700","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-general","category-northamericanbirding","category-travel"],"jetpack_featured_media_url":"","jetpack_sharing_enabled":true,"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/emptynestbirder.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/700","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/emptynestbirder.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/emptynestbirder.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/emptynestbirder.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/emptynestbirder.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=700"}],"version-history":[{"count":5,"href":"https:\/\/emptynestbirder.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/700\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":1606,"href":"https:\/\/emptynestbirder.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/700\/revisions\/1606"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/emptynestbirder.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=700"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/emptynestbirder.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=700"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/emptynestbirder.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=700"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
