{"id":914,"date":"2014-09-19T16:13:58","date_gmt":"2014-09-19T21:13:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/emptynestbirder.com\/?p=914"},"modified":"2020-09-12T15:41:23","modified_gmt":"2020-09-12T20:41:23","slug":"whiskered-tern-at-cape-may-nj-september-17-2014","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emptynestbirder.com\/?p=914","title":{"rendered":"Whiskered Tern at Cape May, NJ           September 17, 2014"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">On September 12, 2014 a Whiskered Tern was identified at Cape May, New Jersey.&nbsp; The Rare Bird Alerts were immediately filled with reports of this sighting, because it is only the third time that a Whiskered Tern has been recorded in North America.&nbsp; It is classified as an ABA Code 5, the rarest of the ABA classifications.&nbsp; The prior sightings, both in the Cape May area, occurred in the 1990s.<\/p>\n<p>Barbara and I flew to Philadelphia and drove to Cape May on Wednesday, September 17.&nbsp; I hoped to add the Whiskered Tern to my North American List, as species number 735.&nbsp; It was one of the easiest excursions to find a rare bird that I have ever experienced.&nbsp; As we drove into the parking lot near the <strong>Cape May Lighthouse<\/strong>,<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" src=\"https:\/\/emptynestbirder.com\/wp-content\/gallery\/2014-july-dec\/lighthouse.jpg\" alt=\"lighthouse\"><\/p>\n<p>we saw dozens of observers with scopes and binoculars lined up on the Hawk Watch platform at the north end of the parking lot.&nbsp; We joined the lineup and immediately saw the <strong>Whiskered Tern snatching insects <\/strong>from the surface of Bunker Pond as it engaged in swift, acrobatic flight.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" src=\"https:\/\/emptynestbirder.com\/wp-content\/gallery\/2014-july-dec\/flying-over-pond-2.jpg\" alt=\"flying-over-pond-2\"><\/p>\n<p>It soon disappeared toward the Atlantic Ocean and we walked a short distance to the beach, hoping to re-find it.&nbsp; It was there and Barbara was able to photograph it <b>among the other terns and gulls <\/b><strong>resting on the sand.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" src=\"https:\/\/emptynestbirder.com\/wp-content\/gallery\/2014-july-dec\/on-the-beach-2.jpg\" alt=\"on-the-beach-2\"><\/p>\n<p>After a few minutes the <strong>tern took off<\/strong> to return to the pond to feast on more insects.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" src=\"https:\/\/emptynestbirder.com\/wp-content\/gallery\/2014-july-dec\/taking-off-2.jpg\" alt=\"taking-off-2\"><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On September 12, 2014 a Whiskered Tern was identified at Cape May, New Jersey.&nbsp; The Rare Bird Alerts were immediately filled with reports of this sighting, because it is only the third time that a Whiskered Tern has been recorded &hellip; <a href=\"https:\/\/emptynestbirder.com\/?p=914\">Continue reading <span class=\"meta-nav\">&rarr;<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"ngg_post_thumbnail":0,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[3,6],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-914","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-general","category-northamericanbirding"],"jetpack_featured_media_url":"","jetpack_sharing_enabled":true,"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/emptynestbirder.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/914","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/emptynestbirder.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/emptynestbirder.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/emptynestbirder.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/emptynestbirder.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=914"}],"version-history":[{"count":9,"href":"https:\/\/emptynestbirder.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/914\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":1559,"href":"https:\/\/emptynestbirder.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/914\/revisions\/1559"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/emptynestbirder.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=914"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/emptynestbirder.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=914"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/emptynestbirder.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=914"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
